About Joomla User Group Toronto
Joomla! User Group Toronto (JUGT) is an informal association of users of the Joomla! open source content management system. It draws its members from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
Since 2009, the group has held regular monthly pub nights, providing an opportunity for members to meet in a casual environment to discuss Joomla and to network. Since then our schedule has expanded to include meetings that feature presentations on specific topics. We hold at least two events per month.
Membership is open to anyone. There are no dues. There is no process for formally joining the group. If you would like to participate, the best way to stay informed is to join our mailing list. Our emails are typically short and to the point. We send out a monthly event list and reminders before the event.
If you are on Facebook, we have both a page and a group there. The group is closed to reduce unwanted posts, so just ask to join and someone will take care of it fairly quickly.

JUGT Steering Committee
Since the JUGT's inception, February 25 2008, it has put on regular pub nights and various workshops and seminars. A few weeks ago, 6 of the core active members decided to band together and build a more organized, more robust group. Lately the steering committee has been planning up-coming events, seminars and workshops, a new website and creating a more formal organizational structure. Since October 6, 2012, the JUGT Steering Committee has been meeting weekly, Tuesday nights at 8pm via Our Google+ Hangout.
One of the groups long term goals is to host a Joomla! Day in Toronto, and we have been meeting with the other Joomla! group leaders in USA and Canada to connect with them an learn from them to make our group as good as it can be!
If you haven't already gotten involved, we encourage you to do so in any way you would like to that you feel would be of benefit. You can be a participant, a planner, a helper, committee member or whatever you feel like! If you have a great idea, or would like to get more involved, please email us.
We are currently looking for venues for workshops and Seminars, we are looking to partner with Educational institutions in Toronto, and we are seeking possible Sponsors.
Stay in touch by making sure you are on the mailing list, come out to the events, enjoy each others company and become better web workers! What do you think of a Christmas party? Check out our facebook page, get connected with us professionally through Linkedin, and make sure you check the website once in a while. Great stuff is coming down the pipeline that you don't want to miss!

Digital Certificates, Joomla! Security Tools,
& Sheldon's Tips and Tricks
We're going to be talking about security related issues this time.
Google is now talking about downgrading sites in searches if they aren't using https. So, you'll want to start using certificates. You can switch your Joomla! site over to https with one setting, but you need a valid certificate to avoid getting error messages.
We'll look at Let's Encrypt, one of the widely available free SSL certificate sources. What can it do for you, what won't it, and how to get one and install it?
We'll also look at Akeeba Admin Tools - how it can help protect your Joomla! sites, and some configuration tips.
Once again we'll finish up with Sheldon giving some valuable insights - this time on the hows and whys of putting in background images on your pages.
